townsend & compton pint mug

here is a good example of the fine pewter holloware made for the american market by the london pewterers john townsend and thomas compton.  townsend was a quaker and spent time visiting the philadelphia area to preach and probably promote his export pewter trade during his later years.  the mug is a simple classic form, one pint in capacity with a 'wr' crown mark next to the handle and 'lamb of god' touchmark inside.  the mug stands 4 1/2" tall and is in good original condition.  it was made between 1784 and 1801.
